Fall of Columbia

1.        What are General Sherman’s beliefs about total war and where did some of these beliefs come from?
2.       How are civilians treated in the occupation of the city and was this treatment necessary? Explain.
3.       Who is to blame for the destruction of the city?
4.       Interesting information/details that will make understanding this event memorable and reflect the human experience of the war. 

Fall of Richmond

1.        What are the beliefs are being held by the civilian population as the war grows closer?
2.       How are civilians treated in the occupation of the city?
3.       What role do General Lee and General Grant play in the fall of the city?
4.       Interesting information/details that will make understanding this event memorable and reflect the human experience of the war. 

The meeting and reconciliation

1.       Describe the contrast between General Grant and General Lee.
2.       Why did Winik  describe the meeting as “…paradoxically, these were among Lee’s finest hours, and they were, so, too, were they Grant’s greatest moments” (Give details and supports)
3.       What was the political and social environment like as the peace process was beginning?
